Put it Together

A catchy hook, combined with good lyrics and melody are what makes a hit song. When I wrote a song for a class, the first thing that I came up with was the melody, followed by the title of the song and the hook. For me, the different verses took longer to write.

The song took shape from a personal experience that I wanted to share. At the time, I had a crush on a guy, but I was too shy to tell him. So this song was, in a way, an alter ego. There was something that I wanted to say, and the chorus is what I imagined I would tell myself. When I was done, it was such a good feeling. It was amazing to me that the song that I ended up with, stemmed from just four words "can you hear me".

Songs can come from a variety of different situations, or, if you are just a good writer and have a good imagination, they can be made up. This does not make them any less powerful. So, whatever your style and process for writing a song is, I have one piece of advice, be passionate about what you write, and if the topic is mostly made up and you are having a hard time, be passionate about writing it. It will give you the strength you need to see it through to the end. I hope that after visitng this site, I have given you the tools to banish your writers block and get the creativity flowing again. If you would like to see an example of the finished product of the song that I mentioned above, and see how I followed the typical song structure listed in the "getting started" section, click on the picture to the right.
